The Free State Crinums are gearing up to defend their Telkom Netball League title as they fine-tune preparations for the upcoming season which starts in less than ten days.
South Africa’s premier netball competition starts next week, with this year’s action set to take place in the North West province. The opening matches will be played at the iconic Sun City.
The defending champions from Bloemfontein will field a fresh-looking side this season, which includes a blend of youth and experience. Among the returning stalwarts are Proteas stars Refiloe Nketsa, Ané Retief, as well as Xandri Fourie, and Liamé de Lange.

While the team is yet to announce its captain for the campaign, one of these seasoned players could be handed the leadership role. Karla Pretorius, who captained the side previously, won’t be on court this season – instead, she’ll serve as an assistant coach.
Crinums and Proteas star Nketsa, a likely candidate for the captaincy, told OFM Sport that the team has its sights firmly set on a fifth TNL title.
“We’ve got a very strong team this year, with quite a few new faces, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that we’re still the defending champions,” Nketsa said.
“We’re definitely looking to retain our title. The aim is to show up in every game, give it our all, and grow as a team throughout the tournament.
“For many of the new players, this will be a completely new experience. But I always say – if you’re new, you’re often more eager to learn, to showcase your talent, and to embrace the journey.
“That said, we also have loads of experience in the squad. The players are willing to work hard, show up for each other, and give their best for the Crinums. We’re all focused on keeping the trophy at home.”

The 2025 Telkom Netball League gets underway next Saturday, with Netball South Africa still to confirm the full fixtures.
