Free State netball legend Karla Pretorius is looking forward to her new role in the upcoming Telkom Netball League (TNL), which gets underway next week.

The vastly experienced Pretorius, who captained the Free State Crinums to victory in last year’s tournament, won’t be taking to the court this season. Instead, she’s stepping into a coaching role, joining the Crinums’ technical team as an assistant coach for their title defence, and laying the groundwork for her future in the sport.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Pretorius shared her excitement about working alongside head coach Martha Mosoahle-Samm.

“Yes, just 10 days to go until the 2025 edition of the TNL starts – we’re really excited and looking forward to it,” she said.

“This time around, I won’t be competing as a player, but rather I’ll be on the bench as the assistant coach of the Free State Crinums. I’m truly looking forward to this new role, as I’m eager to develop and grow in the coaching space. I believe I have a lot to contribute, and I’m really looking forward to working with Coach Martz and the team.

“I see her as a mentor who will guide me through this journey. So yes, I’m really excited to see what 2025 holds. There’s no doubt that we’re aiming to compete for the title again and, at the end of the day, walk away as champions.”

The Crinums boast two senior Proteas in their squad this season – Refiloe Nketsa and Ané Retief – who are expected to provide leadership and experience. The team also features promising players like Xandri Fourie. Nketsa, who captained the University of the Free State to a Varsity Netball title last year, is a strong contender to lead the Crinums this season as well.

However, the team will be without the dynamic Karla Victor, who is expected to represent South Africa’s U21 team in the TNL as part of their preparations for the Junior Netball World Cup in Gibraltar later this year.

The 2025 Telkom Netball League gets underway at Sun City on Saturday, 26 April.
