New Proteas netball coach named next week─── MORGAN PIEK 09:42 Tue, 20 Feb 2024
“We felt that we needed to wait for the appointment of the head coach before a team of fifteen can be finalised and announced.”
The new Proteas netball coach will be announced next week Wednesday.
Netball South Africa has delayed the announcement of the new coach following the exit of the Australian great Norma Plummer.
The 79-year-old Plummer’s last action as the national coach was in January during the three-Test tour of her native Australia.
She enjoyed two spells as the Proteas coach which were from 2015 to 2019 and from 2022 up until last month.
Jenny van Dyk, Rozanne Matthyse and Dumisane Chauke are believed to be the frontrunners for the post.
In January, the Netball South Africa President, Cecilia Molokwane indicated that it would be an injustice to the national team and the incoming coach if the selectors chose a team for the coach without her presence or input.
“We felt that we needed to wait for the appointment of the head coach before a team of fifteen can be finalised and announced. It is the coach that will be working with the players, so it is only right that the coach selects her players to be able to manage them as she sees fit.
“What the camp has been able to do is identify a group we believe she can work with and choose from. For now, the selectors have identified thirty players who they believe are the best out the original invited group.”
Netball South Africa confirmed that announcement of the new coach will be made on Wednesday, 28 February, at 13:00.
