Proteas hockey team thumps Pakistan in Potchefstroom─── MORGAN PIEK 08:35 Tue, 29 Nov 2022
The Proteas got their inaugural International Hockey Federation Nations Cup campaign off to an emphatic start in Potchefstroom on Monday.
In the final match of day one at the North West University, South Africa thumped Pakistan 6-2.
Jacques van Tonder, Mustapha Cassiem, Sam Mvimbi, Tevin Kok the captain Dayaan Cassiem and Keenan Horne all scored for the Proteas.
The Bloemfonteiner Van Tonder, told OFM Sport that he was thrilled to score his first international goal.
"It was a massive privilege, and it was a great team performance. I enjoyed every second on the field," said the Grey College old boy who now plays for the University of Stellenbosch Maties.
"We will celebrate and then we will shift our focus to France on Tuesday."
Luke Wynford, who was playing his first senior game for South Africa, said that he couldn’t have asked for a more enjoyable debut.
"It's obviously a privilege and an honour to play for your country. To get a win and a big one at that, just makes it that much better.
"Our frontline is actually one of the best in the world. They do the job going forward, so we just need to do the job at the back."
In Monday’s other results, Japan beat Canada 3-0 in the opening match of the tournament; Ireland claimed a 2-1 win over France; and Korea beat Malaysia 1-0.
The Proteas will face France on Tuesday at 15:00.
