Steyn set for Olympic debut─── MORGAN PIEK 15:52 Fri, 06 Aug 2021
The reigning Comrades champion, Gerda Steyn, will be in action at the Olympic Games in Tokyo on Saturday during the women’s marathon.
The Bothaville-born and raised Steyn is one of two South Africans in the field of 88 runners, with the other being Irvette van Zyl.
The former Kovsies athlete, Steyn, boasts with a seasons and personal best time of Gerda Steyn 2:25:28 over 42.2km, which makes her one of the fastest runners.
Steyn said the stronger runners will have the edge on the flat course.
“The heat will play such a bit role. It will all depend on the strong runners and not so much the fast-track runners with the speed in their legs.
“It will be much more to do with strength and of course the mental side of staying strong when things get tough.”
The marathon has been brought forward by an hour and the race will now start at 23:00 on Friday evening (SA Time).
