Zane Waddell of the Free State is one of eleven South Africans which will be representing South Africa at the 2018 FINA World Short-course Championships in China.


Waddell, who studies at the University of Alabama in the USA, qualified to compete in the 100m freestyle and the 50m backstroke.

During the South African National Swimming Championships held in Durban, Waddell, recorded a time of 47.54 sec in the 100m freestyle and 23.55 sec in the 50m backstroke.

Waddell told OFM Sport that qualifying for China was one of his goals this year.

“It was a great experience swimming at the South African Short-course Swimming Championships this year.

“I really embraced and seized the opportunity to qualify for the world championships.

“I’m really stoked with qualifying. I wasn’t just there to take part, but I was also there to show that I can actually do something in the pool this time around.”

Waddell added that he will be representing South Africa at the championships in more than one event is really exciting.

"I’m super stoked to have gotten to the point where I can make multiple qualifying times for the national team all in sub-par cold water."

The 2018 Short-course World Championships with take place from 11 to 16 December.

Men: 

Chad le Clos - 100m freestyle (46.45), 50m butterfly (22.57)

Cameron van der Burgh - 100m breaststroke (57.63)

Zane Waddell - 100m freestyle (47.54), 50m freestyle (21.65),  50m backstroke (23.55)

Ryan Coetzee - 50m butterfly - (22.99)

Brad Tandy - 50m butterfly - (23.12)

Ayrton Sweeney - 200m breaststroke (2:06.81).


Women: 

Tatjana Schoenmaker - 200m breaststroke - 2:18.93, 100m breaststroke (1:05.12)

Emily Visagie - 200m breaststroke - 2:23.03

Erin Gallagher - 100m freestyle (53.34), 50m butterfly (26.07), 100m IM (1:01.00)

Rebecca Meder - 200m IM (2:12.35).
