Visitors intrigued by the lion cake at the V&A Waterfront (FOUR PAWS)

Cape Town - The King of theJungle is now also boss at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

The “biggest lion cake ever” is currently on display all in the name of animal welfare.

Dot Klerck, renowned baker, and Elda Thomas from South African Wildlife Project has partnered with Animal Welfare Organisation FOUR PAWS, that also manage the Lions Rock sanctuary outside Bethlehem, to ignite the launch of a new awareness campaign against the trade and essentially brutal killings of lions.

Country Director of Four Paws South Africa, Fiona Miles, explains that the aim of the campaign is to get the public to #RiseUpAndRoar for the protection of our lions.

“Undertakings by government for a proper investigation into the impact that captive breeding has on wild lions, was never even started. Since the last conference of the parties, an export quota of 800 skeletons per annum was decided without consultation. This needs to change,” says Miles.

FOUR PAWS is looking for 300 000 signatures to present to the South African authorities to ensure that during the 2019 CITES COP 18 Conference being held in Sri Lanka, members vote to provide the lion with the highest possible protection.

This amazing one tonne life size cake, which depicts a whole pride, took over 400 hours to complete.

“It was a tremendous honour to partner with FOUR PAWS in creating awareness against the trade of lions. I feel proud and extremely inspired to do my part by applying my skills to save the species,” says Klerck.

The cake will be on display until Sunday 3 June in the main exhibition court in front of H&M at the V&A Waterfront.
