Bloemfontein - Congratulatory messages are still pouring in for learners who passed their matric exams. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State says the class of 2016 has done the province proud.

DA Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL), Mariette Pittaway, however, raised concerns about the number of learners who dropped out of the school system between grades 10 and 12.

"More than a half of learners who enrolled for grade 10 dropped out of the school system. This includes learners who dropped out before their gr.12 year or learners who started with their matric year but did not enrol for the National Senior Certificate (NSC)."

According to her these learners are prone to unemployment and have to face the reality of continuous poverty. The Department of Education should retain these learners and follow in the Western Cape's footsteps. This province has the highest retaining percentage. Most learners in the Western Cape who enrolled in gr. 10 finished their matric year.

More than 55 200 learners enrolled for gr. 10 in 2014 across the Free State. Only more than 29 000 of these learners enrolled for matric last year with only more than 26 700 learners who wrote the National Senior Certificate examinations.
