ANC members clash with Umkhonto we Sizwe Veterans─── 09:20 Mon, 06 Feb 2012

Bloemfontein - Chaos erupted in Thaba Nchu as a group of alleged ANC supporters wielding sjamboks and knobkierries disrupted an Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association workshop at the weekend. Carte Motampane, a member of the Motheo regional branch of the Millitary Veterans Association (MKMVA) said while they were preparing to start with the workshop people wearing ANC's T-shirts entered the hall. He said they threatened violence unless the gathering dispersed. Motampane said the group attacked him before going after the rest of the people in the hall, who fled. He said some of the attackers are known to him, and they said they were specifically targeting him and three other Vets. He claims the Thaba Nchu police refused to open a case, saying they wanted an order from Premier Ace Magashule. Motampane said the situation calmed only after MEC for Police, Roads and Transport Butana Komphela and ANC Motheo regional secretary Paseka Nompondo arrived and addressed the group, which eventually dispersed. A 58-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder. He will appear before the Selosesha Magistrate's Court today.
