Hartbeespoort Dam pollution historic in nature─── 13:37 Mon, 28 Jun 2010
The pollution problem at the Hartbeespoort Dam is "historic in nature". This is the response of the water affairs ministry after legal threats leveled against the department. Acting director general Nobu Ngele says the challenges that plague the dam have been in the making for more than 80 years. She was responding to media reports that an environmental lobby group is planning to bring criminal charges against Minister Buyelwa Sonjica for the pollution contaminating the dam. Ngele says the fish composition in the dam has already improved since the implementation of the Harties Metsi Ame programme which was established in 2006 to deal with water pollution and to address the issue of illegal waste being discharged into the Dam.
