DA finds confidential social development documents dumped on FS field | News Article

The information management systems at the Department of Social Development in the Free State have come under fire after thousands of confidential applications and reports from the department were found scattered on a field in Thaba Nchu.

This is according to the Democratic Alliance in the Free State, which says it has written to the MEC for Social Development in the province, Butana Komphela, demanding that he urgently intervenes in the matter.

The party’s leader in the province, Patricia Kopane, revealed that her team found applications and reports including cases of child abuse and deliberate negligence which should have been considered for children’s court and affidavits by women seeking temporary shelter due to the domestic violence, among others.

"The sad part about this thing is that many people will go back to Social Development to find out progress on their applications and respective cases. But how can the government respond to them because the information is not kept anywhere? It's just been littered everywhere here, so this is a clear sign that the ANC doesn't care about the people. It is time that they stop voting for the ANC," Kopane said.

Kopane said that these documents were discovered during an oversight inspection at a failed waste recycling plant in the areas and some of the most recent documents found were dated October last year. She further said this act made those applicants whose IDs and ID numbers attached to the documents vulnerable to crimes such as identity theft. “It is unacceptable that officials at the department of social development can be so reckless with confidential information which should not be seen by the public,” Kopane further said. She said that the DA will also be handing over the copies of these said dumped documents to the Komphela so that they assist in investigating whether applications have been processed before the documents were dumped, or whether they were dumped to avoid it being processed.
