Two people have died on the N1 between the Engen Kroonvaal and Kroonvaal Plaza - which is between Kroonstad in the Free State and Gauteng.

This is according to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson in the Free State, Sipho Towa, told OFM News that the deaths are as a result of a head-on collision between two light motor vehicles on Wednesday morning.

In the accident, two patients were also critically injured and were airlifted to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, Towa also said that the N1 road between Engen and Kroonvaal and the Kroonvaal Plaza where the collision took place was closed, but traffic is now being regulated.

This accident adds to the carnage on Free State roads, making deaths which were recorded in the province since the start of December more than eighty.

On a national scale, earlier this month, Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande revealed during the release of the annual mid-festive preliminary road safety report that since 1 December, there have been 767 fatalities on South African roads.

According to the report, KwaZulu-Natal had the most deaths (162) followed by Gauteng (125). Limpopo and Eastern Cape had 89 fatalities each, while Mpumalanga had 82, the Western Cape 81, the Free State 78, the North West 57 and the Northern Cape 24.
