FS Public Accounts Committee talks tough | News Article

The Free State Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts in the Legislature has threatened to be harsh on those found to be in the wrong.

This as the committee chairperson, Neels van Rooyen, wanted the buy-in of Members of the Legislature (MPLs) on the findings by the committee carried out earlier.

The committee found that some of the municipalities and departments have recorded a loss of millions of rands through the irregular and wasteful expenditure.

This in the wake of the recent Auditor General’s report in the 2017/18 financial year that several multi-million rand contracts were awarded irregularly by the provincial government. Notably in the AG's report is the irregular expenditure amounting to R4.3 billion recorded by the Finance department.

OFM News previously reported that according to the Auditor-General’s recent report on national and provincial government, the Free State’s audit outcome has significantly regressed over a four-year period.

The report states that the lack of accountability for government spending and the leadership’s disregard for internal controls led to the significant regression in audit outcomes.
