Public warned after Sasolburg man dies in lightning storm | News Article

Lightning is a real danger in South Africa and even though the general public knows it is dangerous, many do not seem to grasp how dangerous it is.

This is according to ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, in a statement issued by ER24 following the death of a man in Sasolburg who was killed in a lightning storm on Monday afternoon. Vermaak said the man was killed while he and colleagues were working and it began to rain. As they ran for cover, the man was struck by lightning and died on the scene. When paramedics arrived on the scene around 16:00, nothing could be done to save the man’s life.

The medical services provider has since issued a series of tips on how to take caution in situations involving lightning. These include making sure that you are indoors, with all doors and windows closed during a lightning storm. Also, residents are warned to not sit near the windows or doors, stay at least 2 meters away. Also, all electronics must be unplugged as lightning can strike power cables that are outside your home, and can travel into the electronic equipment via electrical cables.
