Former Sol Plaatje mayor to be held accountable - DA

Former Sol Plaatje mayor to be held accountable - DA | News Article

Former Sol Plaatje Municipality executive mayor, Mangaliso Matika’s deployment to the Northern Cape Legislature will not bring about the much-needed change.

This is according to the opposition. The DA’s Andrew Louw told OFM News, Matika must still be held accountable for corruption allegations leveled against him during his time as mayor, despite now being a member of the legislature.

He says the Sol Plaatje Municipality has gone into a state of disarray under his leadership, with the community bearing the brunt of lack of services. Louw cites that the city of Kimberley has for years been engulfed by the stench of raw sewage running in their back yards, lack of basic services and Matika did nothing for the city but enrich himself and his cronies.

Louw says Matika’s deployment to the legislature is disappointing taking into account the unrest in the past months calling for his removal.

He further questions what difference will Matika make when the term of office is almost over. Matika was sworn in as an MPL last week Friday.

Louw maintains that the party will hold him to account.

“It cannot be that we allow a situation where a person who was found to be incompetent to his work as the mayor now all of a suddenly gets promoted in become a member of the provincial legislature,” says Louw.
