#JBMarksBillionSquabble: Legal action sought | News Article

The JB Marks Local Municipality in the North West has suffered yet another blow as the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) plans legal action against the municipality.

Scopa Chairperson, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng, tells OFM News they are in contact with their lawyer to assess the viability of a court action against the besieged municipality.

This follows after a squabble between the embattled mayor of the municipality, Kgotso Khumalo, who earlier this week distanced himself from Mahlakeng’s comment when he said the municipality was unable to account for a missing R1 billion.

Mahlakeng says he finds the municipality’s reaction very upsetting and disrespectful.

On Wednesday municipal spokesperson, Victor Boqo, told OFM News that Mahlakeng’s utterance was untrue and unfounded and further said their municipality was financially stable and nowhere near being bankrupt.

Boqo today told OFM News that Scopa is well within its right in a democratic country to take action against the municipality and refused to comment further.

Mahlakeng vehemently frowned upon these claims and said they disrespected parliament, following Khumalo’s absentia at the Legislature committee meeting on Tuesday.

“They disrespected parliament in that, whatever we say or in any meeting of parliament, everything is recorded and one of the things they said in their statement they said I was lying. So I find it very upsetting,” says Mahlakeng.
