A total of 62 military veterans who were identified more than a decade ago as the beneficiaries of houses in Riebeeckstaad near Welkom are still waiting for their houses.

This is according to the party’s Free State leader, Patricia Kopane.

Kopane today (Wednesday) told OFM News that since September 2017 only ten foundations were laid.

She says R48 million was allegedly budgeted by the Department of Human Settlements for this project.

She further committed to writing to the chairperson of Human Settlements, Nocawe Mafu, to request her to summon Matjhabeng’s mayor, Nkosinathi Speelman, and municipal manager, Thabiso Tsoaeli, to appear before the committee and account for the R48 million.

The department has indicated that it will respond in due course.

“We did an oversight, R48 million was budgeted for these military veteran [houses]. Unfortunately, it’s only the foundations that were built in September 2017 but up to now there really is nothing on the ground,” says Kopane.
