Several FCS police members in FS have criminal records | News Article

Despite being hired to protect and serve, 20 members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) unit at the Mangaung Police Station have criminal records.

This is according to DA Shadow Minister of Police, Zakhele Mbhele, who says they will be visiting the FCS unit to inspect whether it is adequately resourced and staffed. This comes after a reply to a DA Parliamentary question, revealing that 57 members of the FCS units across the country, who are supposed to protect victims of family violence, have criminal records.

Mbhele says three of the convictions were serious.

“Three of the convictions were serious - things like fraud and assault. That raises questions and concerns whether these members are fit to do their jobs,” says Mbhele.

Mbhele says they run the risk of being re-victimised at the hands of people who are mandated to protect them.

The DA will be visiting the Mangaung Police Station this morning.
