Angry residents in Heidedal claim that one of their leaders in the fight for land, Daniel Wessenaar, was wrongfully arrested as he was compliant when police forces first arrived in the area on Wednesday afternoon to put an end to land grab.
The 30-year-old Wessenaar, who was arrested in Heidedal yesterday for public violence, will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court today. He was arrested by police during violent protests in the area that have been taking place since Monday.
The situation in Heidedal in Bloemfontein is calm now after disgruntled residents continued their five-day protest. According to sources on the ground, residents are not protesting service delivery, but demand that the government should allocate them sites.
Disgruntled residents have barricaded Witherow Avenue with burning tyres and rocks. The road is also littered with paper and other objects.
At present, the situation appears calm. Local authorities have arrived to monitor the situation.
