One dead, two injured in cash-in-transit robbery─── MARK STEENBOK 16:28 Thu, 19 Apr 2018
The Hawks are investigating a case of armed robbery after an unknown number of suspects allegedly armed with AK47’s, R5s and pistols robbed a vehicle transporting money just outside of a bank in OR Tambo Street in Klerksdorp today.
Hawks spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, says it is believed that the suspects, wearing overhauls, allegedly opened fire on the vehicle while others forced the officers to open the back of the vehicle.
She says shots were later fired between security guards and the suspects.
Rikhotso adds that one security officer was shot dead, while a second was injured in the process.
A bystander was also shot and rushed to a local hospital with the injured security officer.
It is believed that the suspects fled the scene in a Double Cab bakkie with a bag of money. The suspects are still at large and the investigation continues.
