Sixteen prisoners escaped from Johannesburg Correctional Centre, also known as Sun City, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed on Monday.
The spokesperson for the department, Singabakho Nxumalo said the inmates broke through a window, barricades and a wall before getting through the fence.
He said the department has launched a manhunt for the inmates.
Nxumalo said the department will release the prisoners' identities and the crimes they are linked to, at a later stage.
