Government employees and high-end business people have been occupying the Brandwag flats in Bloemfontein, that have been meant for low-income individuals of a pay bracket of R7 500 per month and less, OFM News has reliably learned.

It was discovered Thursday afternoon that these individuals have also been sub-letting the flats to underprivileged and vulnerable people. The Mangaung Metro Municipality spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, told OFM News the real reason why over 49 families are being evicted is because the necessary checks have not been done in a while, and illegal tenants have been staying in the flats.

MeanwhileOFM News spoke to tenants at Brandwag flats. OFM News Josca Human reports:

Khedama says one of the reasons the municipality's debt has been piling up, is because none of the tenants staying at the municipal flats in Brandwag flats have been paying their rent, water or electricity bills. The municipality' debt is over R200 million.

He says the municipality in 2011 told people who do not fall within the brackets of the low-income municipal flats should apply for RDP houses.
