The government has twelve months to fast-track the process of land restitution for Khoi-San communities, as part of their recognition as indigenous communities.

This was one of the recommendations made in the South African Human Rights Commission's (SAHRC) report regarding the human rights situation of the Khoi and San people that was released in the Northern Cape on Tuesday.

This follows a series of hearings that took place across three provinces over the last two years, after allegations of rights violations, inadequate recognition of the Khoi and San peoples.

The hearings also covered forms of discrimination, a lack of land redistribution, and access to basic service delivery.

The Department of Rural Development and the Office of the Presidency were also given twelve months to align land redistribution programmes with capacity and skills development programmes.

The aim of this is to enable beneficiary communities to effectively manage and use land in a sustainable manner.

The report further recommended that the Department of Human Settlements consult with all affected communities in the allocation of land and housing opportunities. The department is also expected to develop a social cohesion strategy that clearly formulates transparent housing policies, which are openly communicated to communities. They are also expected to conduct awareness campaigns on the availability of pro bono legal services for communities that want to submit land restitution claims.
