Wanya Tsotsi hands hundreds of weapons to police─── 18:15 Wed, 10 Jan 2018
Members of Kimberley's Community Crime fighting group, Operation Wanya Tsotsi, has handed over hundreds of weapons, confiscated during their patrol operations, to the Northern Cape police.
The stash included scores of pangas, knives, axes, and other weapons, as well as drugs and other illicit goods.
The deputy minister of police Bongani Mkongi supported the efforts of the community to clean up the streets but reminded them that they were not police officers and did not have the right to arrest criminals.
He added that it was worrisome that young people were becoming professional drunkards and drug lords and stated that he wanted to establish a youth movement to develop and educate young people.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Risimati Shivuri denied that there was any rivalry between the police and the community crime fighters.
This follows after Operation Wanya Tsotsi members were charged for assault while conducting street patrols last year.
Shivuri pointed out that crime fighters had to work under a structured community policing forum.
He added that youths would be trained to become police reservists.
