Forensic tests will start today after #ShosholozaTrainAccident | News Article

Forensic experts from Pretoria will be heading to Kroonstad’s mortuary today to conduct post-mortems and compare DNA material to identify the bodies.

This follows a horrific train accident between the Shosholoza Meyl passenger train and a truck between Hennenman and Kroonstad in the Free State last Thursday.

According to Free State Health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, once this is done family members will be informed to come and collect the remains of their loved ones.

Mondli says at this stage some family members have not been contacted yet.

“We don’t know who their families are, we must first determine who the bodies are. The post-mortems must be done, forensic pathology reports must tell us the DNA matches and then families can claim the bodies. Even if the families go to the mortuary now, they won’t be able to identify any of the bodies,” says Mondli.

Statements are currently being taken from witnesses and passengers, and then decisions will be taken as to how the driver of the truck will be charged.

In the meantime, Prasa has established a 24-hour line, 011-544-9623, that families can call to enquire about their loved ones who were on board the train from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg on January 4, 2018.
