Former FS chair gets nominated for Secretary General #ANC54 | News Article

Former Free State ANC chairperson and Premier, Ace Magashule, got nominated for one of the top six positions in the ANC. He was nominated for the position of Secretary General by five provinces.

According to the official numbers, Magashule and Senzo Mchunu from KwaZulu-Natal were tipped to take over from Secretary General Gwede Mantashe.

Magashule – one of the two so-called Premier’s League and who is known to support Presidential candidate Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma - received a total of 930 nominations against 1479 for Mchunu from seven provinces. Magashule – together with the rest of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in the province – were not allowed to vote.

A total of 300 delegates at the 54th National Elective Conference were excluded. This follows after several court cases by disgruntled ANC members. Fourteen branches and members in the PEC were cited. The Free State High Court found that the provincial conference – where the PEC was elected – was unlawful.

Voting started late last night with the Western Cape, followed by the Free State, to cast their votes. The conference that was plagued by several delays is now expected to run into the week.
