FS Education Department’s financial woes under spotlight─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:32 Thu, 09 Nov 2017
The Treasury MEC in the Free State, Elzabe Rockman, says a number of investigations are underway in different provincial departments.
This, after the Auditor-General’s report indicated financial mismanagement in the provincial government. Rockman says they are currently keeping a very close eye on the Education Department. This, coupled with investigations into the department’s high salary bill, the lack of Learner-Teacher Support Material, and infrastructure and maintenance backlog. She says the department is currently faced with numerous challenges and the administration order cannot be withdrawn yet.
The Education and Health Department are the two provincial departments which have been under Treasury’s care these past years.
Rockman, however, confirms that the administration order for the Health Department might be withdrawn by the end of this month or early next year.
She says coupled with a high salary bill, the department is underfunded and this poses a number of challenges in the province. She says this underfunding is not within the provincial government control as there have been fiscal consolidations since 2009.
