Body of trapped Carletonville miner recovered | News Article

Carletonville – The body of a miner who was trapped in the AngloGold Ashanti Mponeng mine in Carletonville, south-west of Johannesburg, has been recovered, bringing the number of dead miners to two.

The body was recovered on Thursday during a rescue operation, AngloGold mine spokesperson Chris Nthite told News24.

The miner was trapped around 3.8km underground, with the mine being just over 4km deep.

On Wednesday, Nthite said a series of seismic events occurred at the mine in the early hours of Saturday, resulting in the death of a miner. The man was a winch operator, he said.

Nthite said a miner who was injured was still in a stable condition in hospital.

He said safe start-up procedures were underway at the section where the miners were trapped.

"We will remain close to the two families to assist them through this difficult period and beyond," he said.
