Arrest made in child labour case─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 10:43 Thu, 07 Sep 2017
A farmer has been arrested on charges of human trafficking this morning. This is according to the Free State Hawks’ Tsokolo Posholi.
The arrest comes after 53 seasonal child labourers were found on three farms near Allanridge and Wesselsbron. According to the Hawks’ Hangwani Mulaudzi, the Hawks, as well as other departmental stakeholders, are currently on a farm investigating. The farms have been declared crime scenes.
“The Hawks have confirmed that there will be action today and the details thereof will be communicated at a later stage. Suggestions are that the farmer will be arrested. The main charge is trafficking in persons, of course. There will be other charges but that is the main one,” explains Mulaudzi.
The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is happy with the outcome of a meeting held with the Free State MEC for Police, Roads, and Transport, Sam Mashinini, as well as Premier Ace Magashule, on Wednesday night. This is according to NCOP’s Mandla Rayi. The meeting was held to discuss progress in the investigation of the 53 minors. The NCOP’s joint committees are on a week-long visit to various departments in the province.
