Living conditions of the elderly troubling─── 17:14 Thu, 17 Aug 2017

Employees and those affiliated with Boikhuco Old Age Home in Bloemfontein are tired of bearing witness to the dire conditions in which the elderly and their grandchildren are living in, conditions that are continuing to worsen daily.
Mohau Mokeki, Lebogang Mogamisi, Sello Lekoa, Manana Moholo, Michael Mathe and FS EFF’s, Baba Sebolao, have decided to highlight these circumstances with the hope that getting the word out, might be the catalyst for change in these communities.
The day was spent going around to the homes of 85-year-old Annie Jansen, who lives with eleven other people in a home with an unstable structure; 83-year-old Evelyn Lebojaoang Mohlomi, whose home gets flooded when it rains due to a bad foundation, and Mabuang Nchoela who lives in a shack and has no toilet.
Baba Sebolao says that he adopted the old age home and found that there were several challenges that the dedicated staff members were encountering, difficulties that required resources and funds that were out of reach even for those who wanted to assist. He goes on to say that these needs require government’s urgent attention, considering how immensely vulnerable and dependent the elderly and their grandchildren, in some instances, are.
Mokeki, an administrator working for Boikhuco Old Age Home says that she started working for the home last year, and since then she recalls three grannies whom she alleges were killed whilst living in the care of their children or grandchildren in separate incidents. She says the situation is of great concern to the staff at the Old Age Home.
