Bloemfontein - The son of one of the six women who were involved in a horrific bus accident on the N8 between Bloemfontein and Botshabelo, which claimed 8 lives and left 51 people injured, says he is deeply saddened by his mother’s death.

Rantoa Ralekholela says his mother was a domestic worker and the breadwinner at home. He says they are hopeless and do not know which way to turn to. He says they are currently at the government mortuary to request that the body of their mother be transferred to their hometown, Botshabelo, although they are at this stage not sure how they are going to cover the cost of the burial.

Ralekholela appeals to the Interstate Bus Lines to prioritise the safety of passengers and ensure that their drivers comply with the rules of the road. “Most Interstate bus drivers are known for their recklessness and nothing seems to be done about it. Today, we have even lost our mother. Where does that leave us?” asked Ralekholela.

“I am currently unemployed and my other two siblings are still at school, we were depending on her. She worked as a domestic cleaner for three employers just to make ends meet. She used to earn R100 per day and we had to survive on the little she made.”

Ralekholela says Interstate Bus Lines promised to assist with funeral arrangements and costs, however, there has not been any communication with the provincial government. He says they have not yet determined the date of her burial.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Premier, Ace Magashule, issued a statement expressing his condolences to the families of the deceased.
