Bloemfontein - Municipal workers and councillors at the Mangaung Metro Municipality are still awaiting outstanding salaries.

EFF councillor, Baba Sebolao, says they were supposed to be paid this month’s salary by last week already. He says they are surprised that they still have not been paid despite being on a legal strike.

Members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) in Mangaung have been on a full blown strike for more than two weeks and have stated that they will not go back to work until their demands are met which, among others, include the payment of salaries to temporary workers since the month of April, a salary increment, the cessation of daily political interference in the administration of the municipality, nepotism, and the absorption of all temporary workers who have been in the system for more than three months. Sebolao says it is unacceptable that they have not been paid without being notified.

“I don’t know why we did not get paid. There is a strike going on but I don’t think that can be an issue. All of us did not get our salaries and it is unacceptable. This strike did not start yesterday. They knew a long time ago that the strike was coming. The municipality should have made arrangements. It is the first time since we have been adjudicated as Councillors that come across this problem.

Sebolao says they normally get paid on the 28th and they are appalled that they are still not paid.

The Mangaung Metro Municipality is yet to respond to OFM News’ enquiries.
