Walus parole appeal back in court─── MOEKETSI MOGOTSI 08:12 Mon, 29 May 2017
Bloemfontein - The Justice Minister’s application to appeal the release of Chris Hani's killer, Janusz Walus, will be back at the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein today.
The appeal was postponed to allow Hani’s family to file statements as they felt their side of the story needed to be taken into account when Walus was granted parole by the Pretoria High Court last year.
Second Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Solly Mapaila, also argued that the victim-offender dialogue is essential on parole matters. Mapaila said Justice Minister, Michael Masutha, needed to include the family’s statements as part of the court documents when he initially appealed Walus' parole. He also said Walus must serve the rest of his life in prison for assassinating Hani because he hasn’t showed remorse for his actions.
The Young Communist League of South Africa is also set to host a Chris Hani memorial lecture at the University of the Free State’s Bloemfontein campus this evening following the SCA judgment.
