This is according to statistics released by the Department of Transport.
Transport minister, Joe Maswanganyi, said the Free State recorded a 27 percent decline in road deaths, with only eight fatalities this year as compared to 11 during this period last year.
Meanwhile, the Northern Cape and North West were among the provinces where the highest increases in road deaths were recorded. In the Northern Cape there was an increase of seven fatalities while in North West there were four more fatalities than during the same period last year.
Overall, this year’s Easter fatalities increased by 79 from 156 in the previous year to 235 this year.
