Controversial dairy project gets millions─── CATHY DLODLO 12:08 Sat, 25 Mar 2017
Bloemfontein - The Free State Development Corporation (FDC) - which manages the controversial multimillion rand Vrede Dairy Project - was allocated more than R23 million for the 2017/18 financial year.
Free State Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC, Benny Malakoane, said in his budget speech delivered in the provincial legislature on Friday the entity has its own challenges such as a crippling debt book.
The management of the Vrede project was moved to the FDC after allegations of fraud and corruption regarding the project emerged. A report on the project, following an investigation by the Office of the Public Protector, is expected next month.
The government went ahead with the R500 million flagship project despite a leaked report by National Treasury which indicated that it would not be viable.
