More than a billion set aside for roads in Free State | News Article

Bloemfontein - The biggest chunk of the Free State department of police, roads and transport's budget is going towards the improvement of the road network in the province.

All political parties in the provincial legislature welcomed the move announced by MEC Sam Mashinini in his budget speech yesterday. He said his department has R2.7 billion rand available for the 2017/2018 financial year. This includes a provincial road maintenance grant of more than R1.2 billion.

Mashinini said on top of his department’s to-do-list is the milling and re-sealing of three critical roads – the Bultfontein/Welkom, Bethlehem/Reitz and Jim Fouche/Deneysville – in the province.

Together with the refurbishment projects that started in the previous financial year that will continue this year these projects will cost the department R150 million. A further R75 million has also been set aside for the re-gravelling of roads in all five districts of the province.
