Ficksburg - Residents of Senekal, Ficksburg, Clocolan and Marquard are in for a serious water crisis, as the Caledon river is nearly completely dry.

This has forced the Setsoto municipality to cut water to these towns, and only provide tapped water for two hours per day, between 18:00 and 20:00.

The municipality says if rains don't come soon, things can only get worse.

In the past, the municipality could appeal to the national government to have water released from the Lesotho Highlands water scheme in order to prevent taps from running dry. This time, however, they don't have this option, as the Katse dam levels are also low.

Head of the Setsoto municipality's water department, Thabo Mokhoeta, says this means they cannot extract water from the dam, as water supply to Gauteng takes priority.
