Thaba Nchu police officer receives 12 years for wife's murder | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Free State High Court has sentenced a former Thaba Nchu police officer to 12 years imprisonment for the murder of his wife at her workplace at Pelonomi Hospital.

Judge Corné van Zyl also sentenced Jacob Mokanyane to 30 months imprisonment for contravening a temporary restraining order. The sentences will run concurrently.

In sentencing, the court held that there were enough reasons not to impose the minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment.

It was held Mokanyane's guilty plea, the fact that he showed remorse, that he is a first offender, that he was under severe emotional strain, had depression and that he was in a marriage, which was riddled with conflict, were enough mitigating circumstances.

After sentencing, Mokanyane asked his family and his former wife's family for forgiveness. He was hugged by several family members afterwards.
