Zastron - The well-known Aasvoëlberg Outdoor Centre in Zastron, where school children from across the country have been attending school camps for many years, was yesterday burnt to the ground by a runaway veld fire in the district.
Head of the Zastron Fire fighters association, Steyn van Ronge, told OFM News a fire was started yesterday just outside town, allegedly by members of an initiation school in the area, and quickly spread south where between 3000 and 5000 hectares of grazing land as well as the Outdoor Centre were destroyed.
Van Ronge says community members, farmers and farm workers worked until last night to extinguish the flames. Due to a water shortage in the area, water to fight the flames had to be extracted from the animal cribs on farms.
One farmer sustained mild injuries and was treated at the local hospital. The fire has been brought under control.
