Leeudoringstad - All learners from the North West School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad that were treated for smoke inhalation and injuries after they tried to escape a fire that broke out early yesterday morning, have been released from hospital.
North West Education Spokesperson, Elias Malindi, says all 53 injured learners are being accommodated at other schools in Wolmaransstad.
This comes after a fire broke out in the girls hostel adjacent to a dormitory for boys, killing three learners yesterday. Malindi says all 65 learners enrolled at the school are being cared for. He says the fire broke out in the hostel for girls. The extend of the damage is huge.
The names of the learners who succumbed to burn wounds have not been released yet.
Malindi says the school has meanwhile lost a total of six lives in the past three weeks. This comes after an assistant teacher and two learners died in a car accident when they returned from a school trip three weeks ago.
