Leeudoringstad - Three learners were killed and another 13 injured when a fire broke out at the North West Secondary School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad in the early hours of this morning.
Maquassi Hills Fire Department spokesperson, Isaac Maine, says a call came in at around 02:00 to report that the school's roof was on fire. The fire spread to the girl's hostel, which is where the three victims died. An administration block, computer laboratory and two teachers’ flats were also damaged.
Maine told OFM News this morning that it was a struggle to contain the fire, but it has since been extinguished.
The injured learners were treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital in Wolmaransstad.
North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has meanwhile set up a technical team comprising of senior administrators from the Departments of Education and Sport Development, Health, Social Development and Community Safety and Transport Management.
The technical committee will, among others, gather information with a view to intervening at the school. Learners will be counselled by professionals from government departments who are being assigned by the technical team.
