Matjhabeng municipality's financial woes get another twist─── 18:41 Mon, 04 May 2015
Bloemfontein - The cash strapped Matjhabeng Local Municipality was criticised heavily after it was revealed that it is paying the legal bill for the cases involving its former mayor and municipal manager – now MECs in Premier Ace Magashule’s provincial cabinet.
Free State Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Olly Mlamleli said - in her answer on a written question from the DA in the Legislature – that the Matjhabeng municipality is footing the legal bill for the then mayor Mathabo Leeto – now MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture and former municipal manager, Benny Malakoane – now the MEC for Health.
The financial woes of this municipality have come under the spotlight after National Treasury withheld its equitable share because of its debt to Eskom and the Water Board.
Municipal spokesperson, Khojane Matutle confirmed the payment in an interview with OFM News.
