HPSCA to investigate rape-accused Bloemfontein doctor in January | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Health Professions Council of South Africa will conduct investigations next year to determine whether or not disciplinary processes will be carried out against a Bloemfontein doctor who stands accused of rape.

Two patients laid rape charges against the 33-year-old doctor last year. The incidents allegedly took place in his surgery.

The National Prosecuting Authority withdrew one of the charges in June this year, after they saw no prospect of a successful prosecution. The council has confirmed that the investigation will take place on 19 and 20 January, and that the doctor is currently registered with them.

Should January's investigation lead to a HPCSA trial, the doctor could face a number of penalties ranging from removal from the register, a fine or a caution.

The former Kovsie student was previously fined abroad, after he admitted to having a sexual relationship with an underage patient.

He will go on trial in the Bloemfontein High Court from March 23 next year.
