Death toll in Hartswater crash reaches 15 | News Article

Hartswater - Two more people have died after a bakkie accident on the N18 near Hartswater, bringing the death toll to 15, Northern Cape police said on Monday.

"Two more people died in hospital yesterday [on Sunday]," said Lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana.

A mini-bus taxi collided with a bakkie on Saturday afternoon killing 13 people, police reported on Sunday.

"Some of those who died are children but I cannot confirm how many or their ages until their families have come in to identify them," Tawana said.

Twenty-four other people, including the driver of the taxi, were injured in the crash, he said.

"The passengers from the bakkie were flung off and strewn all over the N18 and others landed into a nearby water canal," Tawana said.

Four bodies were found in the canal while the jaws-of-life had to be used to free people who were trapped inside the taxi.

The injured were taken to Hartswater,Taung and Klerksdorp hospitals.

The 59-year-old driver of the bakkie was expected to appear in the Hartswater Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"He will now be facing 15 charges of culpable homicide," said Tawana.
