Lichtenburg - The department of health in North West will investigate the deaths of 11 children in Biesiesvlei near Lichtenburg, allegedly due to contaminated water.
Health spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, says the department will go through the files of all affected health facilities in a bid to establish the facts around the allegations.
Lekgethwane says the investigation will be time-consuming but is necessary to establish whether AfriForum’s allegations that e-coli was found in water sources in the Itekeng informal settlement are true.

The civil rights group claims there are also high levels of contamination in the Harts river. The Ngaka Modiri Molema district municipality has been placed under administration because of poor water and sanitation services, among other things.
Earlier this year, three babies died in Bloemhof, North West, also due to the effects of water contamination.
