Rustenburg - Police maintained a strong presence on the platinum belt in Rustenburg following raids at several mines this weekend. More than 500 police officers carried out raids at the Lonmin, Anglo American Platinum and Impala mines. Dozens of people were arrested for carrying illegal weapons and for drunken behaviour. Police said it was the first time not a single incident of crime was reported since tensions between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) first flared up. North West police spokesperson, Thulane Ngubane said the operation was part of a strategy to reclaim the area. Meanwhile thousands of miners working the area travelled to the Eastern Cape for the funeral of Amcu leader Mawethu Stevens who was shot dead at a tavern near Amplats' Khomanani shaft last week.
