Shark attack at Melkbaai, The Strand─── 16:56 Fri, 01 Oct 2010
Melkbaai - A young surfer was taken to hospital after being bitten on the foot by a shark at Melkbaai in the Strand. ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser says the incident happened at about 2.30 this afternoon. The surfer, a teenager, had three deep lacerations, penetrating to the bone, and had lost blood. He was treated on the spot and en route to hospital.
The National Sea Rescue Institute issued a seasonal shark warning at the end of August, saying bathers, paddlers and surfers should be aware of sharks' seasonal migration closer towards shore, and should be "extremely cautious". Bathers and surfers have since been cleared from the sea by shark spotters at Muizenberg and at Fish Hoek on several occasions after sharks were spotted close inshore.
