The young South African golfer, Garrick Higgo, claimed the eighth professional win of his career by taking victory at the Corales Puntacana Championship on the PGA Tour in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.

This win marked Higgo’s first since his breakthrough PGA Tour victory at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina back in June 2021.

On Sunday, the 25-year-old Higgo secured a one-stroke win after a dramatic collapse from American pro Joel Dahmen, who led the field for most of the tournament. Higgo carded a final round of level-par 72 to finish at 14-under-par, edging out Dahmen, Michael Thorbjornsen, Keith Mitchell (all from the USA), Alejandro Tosti of Argentina, and Germany’s Jeremy Paul, who all tied for second at 13-under-par.

In the final round, Dahmen struggled with six bogeys, including three on the last three holes, which ultimately derailed his title hopes as he finished with a four-over-par 76. His birdies on the fourth and 11th holes helped him to finish in a tie for second.

Reflecting on his second PGA Tour win, the left-handed golfer, Higgo, spoke about the tremendous amount of hard work that had gone into his career over the past four years. He admitted that he initially thought a level-par 72 wouldn’t be enough to secure the win.

“Yeah, geez, it’s just been so much hard work – the last two years with my coach, Foley, who I’m sure is watching, and my wife, who has been through everything with me, my family,” Higgo said. “I thought it would be crazy and that the wind would calm down, but it just got harder and harder.

“It’s just a lot of validation – and I still think my game has a long way to go. This week was a big step in the right direction, but it’s been trending. You go through a lot of dips, and there are a lot of dark places this game takes you.”

Higgo has previously won three titles on the DP World Tour (European Tour), twice on the Sunshine Tour, and once on the European Challenger Tour as well.

The other South African golfer in the field to make the cut was Thomas Aiken, who finished with a three-over-par 75, ending in a tie for 59th at level par. Erik van Rooyen, Aldrich Potgieter, and Dylan Frittelli all missed the cut.
