De Zorzi and Stubbs lead way with maiden tons─── MORGAN PIEK 14:12 Tue, 29 Oct 2024
The Proteas are in a strong position at stumps on day one of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram thanks to an outstanding batting display by Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs.
South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first on Tuesday, and it was the right decision as they posted 307/2 when play was called.
The opening batter De Zorzi and Stubbs each scored maiden Test centuries as South Africa took firm control of the Tests.
De Zorzi was unbeaten on 141, while Stubbs in turn scored 106 before he was dismissed. Both batters showed a lot of intent with the bat with De Zorzi hitting 10 fours and three sixes, while Stubbs in turn struck six fours and three maximums as well.

There will be some concern over De Zorzi as at times he showed discomfort at the crease which required medical attention on a few occasions. The captain Aiden Markram in turn scored 33, while David Bedingham was unbeaten with 18.
Stubbs said while it was a good wicket for batting, it was important to stay focussed because there were periods where the hosts bowled well.
“I thought it was quite tough, they also got into it just enough to get you thinking,” said Stubbs. “It was a good batting wicket but it was hard to score freely, but you were going to get yourself out by like giving them your wicket.
“Until lunch I thought that I was scoring quite freely and then coming in after the break it really felt hard to get off strike. The ball was doing a bit and it was a good period for them, and then I sort of just grafted it out. Then once I got my rhythm back again, I felt quite comfortable.
“Then to get the three figures was a big relief more than anything.”

Taijul Islam took both wickets on Tuesday following a marathon effort of 30 overs which yielded 2/110.
Day two at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday morning at 6:00.
