The Proteas captain, Aiden Markram, has lauded the fast bowler Kagiso Rabada following his stellar performance during the 1st Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

On Thursday Rabada finished with figures of 6/46 in Bangladesh’s second innings as the Proteas bowled the hosts out for 307 runs during the 7-wicket win.

In the first innings, Rabada also took three wickets for a Test tally of nine scalps. It was in this same innings that the 29-year-old took his 300th Test wicket to become the sixth player after Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini, Dale Steyn, and Morné Morel to join the elite 300 Club.

Markram, who won the 2014 U19 Cricket World Cup in Dubai with Rabada said his long-time teammate is a special player indeed and they are very lucky to have him in the team. “KG is a superstar for us,” said the player who led South Africa to their first Test win on the subcontinent in more than 10 years.

“He’s been a superstar for years, and seeing all those stats come up after his 300th wicket really proves he’s one in a million. We’re very lucky to have him in our team, and it’s fantastic to see him doing so well.”

In the same breath, Markram added that he is also delighted for the mentally tough batter, Kyle Verreynne, who played a match-winning knock of 114 runs during South Africa’s first innings. “In terms of Kyle, it was an extraordinary moment for him,” Markram added.

“He’s been in and out of the team over the last few years, but he’s had a bit of backing from the management, and he’s looked comfortable in the environment.

“We all know he can play – he’s a good player of spin, and to score a hundred in his first Test match in the subcontinent is a really special feat.”

Earlier in the week, the Free State legend and ICC Hall of Fame inductee, Allan Donald, told OFM Sport that Rabada is certainly one of the very best we’ve produced and he believes he will take many more wickets.

The second and final Test in Chattogram will get underway on Tuesday.
